Types of Giving According to the Bible
The first biblical record of tithing can be found in the story of Abraham’s meeting with Melchizedek, king of Salem and king of Peace (an archetype of the CHRIST), to whom he gave a tenth of all his substance. Tithing is not just the giving of a portion of one’s income, but a portion of ALL that GOD has entrusted to the believer – time, talents, intellect, emotions, resources, etc. It’s our way of acknowledging GOD as source and provider of all things. It is to be brought into the temple of GOD, and is established by GOD, as a system for ensuring, that the church is always sufficiently resourced to carry out its mandate in the earth. The principle of tithing should not be regarded as an Old Testament requirement, but as an enduring ordinance, affirmed by JESUS during His earthly ministry and reaffirmed by the Apostle Paul as he taught and mentored the early church. Tithing places us under an open heaven, which is your rate of return. It is a shield against recession and mishaps.
As the name suggests, the Freewill offering does not have any scriptural requirements regarding amount. Rather, it is a matter of choice and should be given without any sense of compulsion or duty. The believer, out of a desire to honour GOD, chooses to willingly and joyfully render an offering to GOD. It forms part of GOD's holistic blessing system and believers are encouraged to regularly give offerings to GOD.

Firstfruit offerings, another type of biblical giving, are donations taken from the first installment of one's income and investments. It is a way to acknowledge GOD's goodness towards us and His sovereignty over our affairs, as the one from Whom all blessings come. Scripture encourages the believer to actively participate in the giving of firstfruit offerings, thereby activating the blessing system of the kingdom. As we return the first 'crops' of the harvest to the GOD Who caused the field to flourish, He will cause the field to produce even greater yields.

Thanksgiving Offering The Thanksgiving Offering is an expression of gratitude to GOD. It is the believer's way of communicating gratitude to GOD for specific acts of mercy shown by GOD - healing, breakthrough, forgiveness, provision, deliverance, favour, preservation, victory, etc. It is a potent way to seal a blessing received but must be done with sincerity and humility.Â

The Sacrificial Offering or Sacrificial SEED is an expression of pure faith. It is a seed given in lean times when material, financial and other resources are limited or strained. It is the believer's way of saying to GOD - "You are my source; I trust You completely and I entrust all I have to you." It is given from a place of deep conviction, that GOD is the believer's life source, and is a profound and indisputable way to communicate one's commitment to this truth. The Sacrificial Offering is a powerful tool for activating the miraculous.

Almsgiving is an offering given to assist to the poor. It is based on a long established biblical principle, and one strongly endorsed by CHRIST JESUS during His earthly ministry. As believers, we are charged with a responsibility to extend JESUS' compassion to the poor and downtrodden.

The Prophet Offering is a scripturally established and biblically based way of petitioning GOD's help and favour, through His specially appointed servant - the Prophet. A prophet is a person, specially selected by GOD, to reveal His will to His people. The prophet is endowed with a supernatural ability, wisdom and grace to know and discern the will of GOD for His people, as well as the authority to change times, seasons and situations. The Prophet Offering is a gift given to a Man or Woman of GOD, whom He has appointed to the office of Prophet, in acknowledgment of the grace upon his or her life. It's a way to pay homage to the man or woman of GOD for the high levels of consecration, devotion and sacrifice the office demands. It is a way to show honour to GOD's servant for devoted service to GOD and GOD's people.

Prophetic SEED/ SEED Offering Prophetic Seeds or Seed Offerings are special offerings made to GOD, to entreat His miraculous intervention, in situations where human effort alone, would be futile. The principle is based on the law of sacrifice, and the offering is given with the understanding that engaging in high warfare and battle in the spirit realm is not child's play, and therefore demands a substantive offering. What is important is not the monetary value of the gift but the degree of personal sacrifice it represents. Prophetic Seeds can result in miraculous turnaround in seemingly impossible or irresolvable situations. It is however important for the giver to understand that one cannot use a seed to manipulate GOD into granting a desired outcome. GOD is sovereign - He is bound by His Word and His will remains eternally paramount. The Holy Spirit will always examine our motives and reference GOD's will and word, no matter how great the sacrifice. An offering given from a pure and upright heart, with godly motives is therefore an essential part of giving.Â
